“White sharks are common in the Gulf according to a spokesman at the Game and Fish Commission Laboratory in Rockport.”
This quote comes from The Progress newspaper in Aransas Pass, TX from July 14, 1960.
The story is actually about a major feature on sharks that appeared in Life magazine, which at the time was read by millions.
It’s one of the few references I can find in mainstream media at this time to great white sharks in the Gulf of Mexico.
Were they really common?
It’s impossible to tell without proper surveys but it does give good context to great whites being in the Gulf of Mexico.
Interestingly, Aransas Pass and Port Aransas (just a few miles from one another) is the area where multiple Texas great white shark tales have occurred. You can read one of those here.
