When A Great White Shark’s Prey Strikes Back

Great white sharks are apex predators but they’re not immune to harm. What happens when a great white shark’s prey turns on them?

In the final installment of our five-part series with Megan Winton of the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy we talk about what happens when large prey items like seals strike back at great white sharks.

While great white sharks are renowned for their predatory prowess, they are not immune to the risks and challenges of hunting in the wild. In fact, encounters with their prey can sometimes result in unexpected outcomes, leaving the sharks with injuries and thwarted attempts at securing a meal.

One of the most striking examples of this phenomenon involves the interaction between great white sharks and their primary prey, seals. In the cold water climates these two formidable adversaries engage in a relentless battle for survival. While the great white shark possesses unmatched speed and power, the seals are not defenseless. With their agility and sharp instincts, they can deliver powerful blows to their attackers, inflicting wounds that can prove fatal or debilitating.

In some cases, seals have been observed fighting back against great white sharks with astonishing ferocity. Using their sharp teeth and powerful jaws, they can deliver crippling bites to the sharks, causing significant injuries that hinder their ability to hunt effectively. These encounters highlight the dynamic and unpredictable nature of predator-prey relationships in the ocean, where success is never guaranteed for either party.

Furthermore, great white sharks often expend considerable energy and resources in pursuit of their prey, with no guarantee of a successful outcome. Their ambush hunting strategy relies on stealth and surprise, but even the slightest miscalculation can result in failure. Additionally, competition with other predators, such as orcas, further complicates their hunting endeavors, increasing the likelihood of unsuccessful hunts.
