About Us

I’m Chester Moore, founder of the Gulf Great White Shark Society — and someone who has been obsessed with sharks since I was a child. As an award-winning wildlife journalist, author, and host of numerous wildlife documentaries and podcasts, I’ve spent decades exploring the wonders of the Gulf of Mexico and helping people connect with its most incredible creatures.

From my early writing days to serving as Editor-in-Chief of Texas Fish & Game, my work has always focused on wild things — but sharks, especially great whites, have always had a special place in my heart.

The Birth of the Gulf Great White Shark Society

On June 20, 2025, the 50th anniversary of the movie Jaws, I launched the Gulf Great White Shark Society to raise awareness about great white sharks and other large sharks in the Gulf of Mexico.

This society was born out of a passion for the Gulf’s underappreciated shark presence — and the increasing evidence that great white sharks are coming into Gulf waters in numbers not seen in modern history. The Society serves as a hub for education, exploration, and celebration. No politics. Just education and inspiration.

Our Mission

We are dedicated to:

  • Raising awareness about great whites and other large sharks in the Gulf.
  • Encouraging conservation through facts, storytelling, and community outreach.
  • Building a fun, supportive community of shark lovers in the Gulf region and beyond.

What We Do

  • Events & Outreach: From documentary premieres to coastal dinners, we bring people together to celebrate sharks.
  • Education & Youth Programs: Including mentorship, scholarships, and even cage-diving opportunities for young people.
  • Research Promotion: Sharing verified sightings, tagging info, and helping educate the public on shark activity in the Gulf.
  • Media & Content: Producing films, articles, and podcasts to keep the public informed and inspired.

Why the Gulf?

Most people don’t associate the Gulf with great white sharks but they’re here. Offshore anglers, researchers, and satellite tags have all confirmed their presence, particularly in cooler months. Alongside species like bull sharks, makos, blacktips, hammerheads, and tiger sharks, the Gulf hosts an incredible range of apex predators.

By focusing attention on this region, we’re helping shift the conversation and shine a spotlight on these misunderstood creatures and their vital role in the ecosystem.
