Three great white sharks fitted with Ocearch satellite transmitters have shown up south of New Orlenas, La. over the course of a few days.
*Keiji, a 578 pound, 9’7 male showed up March 28, 2024 and was originally tagged at Ironbound Island Nova Scotia Sept. 2021.
*Crystal appeared in the area March 30. This 10-foot-long, 460-pound female has showed up in the Gulf before. She z-pinged, which happens when the shark doesn’t breach long enough for a solid reading. It doesn’t provide an accurate location reading but it is believed to be in the same general region as the other two on this list.
*Rose, a 10’5, 600 pound female showed up March 31. She was originally tagged Oct. 2020 in Lunenburg Nova Scotia.
These are obviously juvenile great whites and show just how much girth these sharks ad as they age. For example, LeeBeth is 2,600 pounds and she is only 3.5 feet longer than Rose. There is a 400 disparity in weight between these two sharks!
I have been in contact with two reputable anglers who claim great white sightings in the Chandeleur Islands, which is in the vicinity of these pings.
I suspect as research continues on great whites in the Gulf of Mexico and more people speak about, we will hear more about the Chandeleur Islands area. It is the most shark rich area I have ever been to and has abundant tuna, marine mammals and other large fish in the general area of the Mississippi River outflow.
It’s a gut feeling I have, so we’ll see.
For now, it’s cool to know there are some white sharks south of the Big Easy.
