Great white sharks have recently been caught from the surf along Florida’s Gulf Coast — something that surprises many anglers and beachgoers. In my newest video, we take a closer look at several recent catches of great whites from Drop Zone Fishing Charters and what they might reveal about great white shark movement in the Gulf of Mexico.

Watch the video here.

While Florida has seen a few notable surf catches lately, great whites have also appeared in places many people wouldn’t expect, including Louisiana and even Texas waters.

So the question becomes: what are these sharks eating in the Gulf, and why are they here?

Unlike the Pacific coast, where great whites are strongly associated with seal colonies, the Gulf doesn’t have large pinniped populations. Yet these sharks still show up periodically, sometimes close to shore.

We explore what scientists know about their movements, the possible prey species drawing them into Gulf waters, and what recent catches may tell us about how these apex predators use the region.

It’s a reminder that the Gulf still holds plenty of mysteries, even when it comes to one of the most famous predators in the ocean.

Special thanks to the captains documenting these encounters: Captain Zachary Burnette and Captain Chip Michalove — Outcast Sport Fishing-who took the photo of “LeeBeth” and tagged are along with Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.

I created the Gulf Great White Shark Society to raise awareness of great whites and other large sharks in Gulf waters. It’s not a political or lobbying group. It’s about awareness and we cover all aspects.

We want people to be informed to figure out the course of action they want to take to help sharks.
