Great White Traveled 1,700 Miles — Now We’re Planning A Great White Christmas

Great white sharks are once again making headlines in the Gulf of Mexico after an Ocearch satellite-tagged great white was recently detected off the Florida Panhandle near Apalachicola.

Tagged by OCEARCH off Nova Scotia on September 30, the sub-adult male great white known as “Ripple” made an astonishing journey of nearly 1,770 miles in just 25 days, pinging off the Jacksonville coast by October 25.

Now it has entered the Gulf according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

Sightings like this are an exciting reminder that great whites are returning to Gulf waters and that there is still so much to learn about these powerful and misunderstood animals.

At the Gulf Great White Shark Society, moments like this fuel our mission to educate, inspire, and shift public perception of sharks from fear to fascination—especially for young people.

Last time we visited a group of kids in the foster system, we shared our shark documentary with them. Their excitement, curiosity, and questions about sharks and the ocean left a lasting impression on all of us. It showed just how impactful wildlife education can be when kids are given the chance to connect with real stories from the natural world.

This Christmas, we want to build on that experience by giving these kids a Great White Christmas. We are putting together shark-themed gift packages that combine fun with conservation inspiration. Each package will include items like shark books, educational materials, toys, and gifts designed to spark curiosity about sharks, science, and ocean conservation.

We need your help to make this happen. We’ve created an Amazon gift list with carefully selected shark-themed items that will go directly into these Christmas packages. Every gift helps us inspire wonder, learning, and a deeper appreciation for sharks and the role they play in healthy oceans.

By supporting this effort, you’re not just giving a holiday gift—you’re helping plant the seeds of conservation in young minds.

We need gifts ordered by Monday Dec. 15 so we can get them in time for our Christmas visit.

Together, we can make this a Great White Christmas they’ll never forget.

You can order from our Amazon list for these girls here.
