Horses Kill More People Than Sharks!

With Summer looming I thought it was time to send out a post to give you some information you have to dig really deep to find. For example, did you know a common domesticated animal kills more people than sharks?

The following information ranges from the esoteric to the criminally underreported.

Horse Vs. Shark

Sounds like a Syfy Original doesn’t it?

In reality, I am talking statistics and according to the Centers for Disease Control sharks kill about one person in the United States annually. Horses kill around 20.

Now horses are running up to people and attacking them in the wild but quite a few people die riding and working with horses.

That won’t grab too many headlines because too many media figures and influential people have horses but it is a fact. Horses are great. I in fact have two of them but facts are facts.

Sharks are easy to sensationalize but in reality, Mr. Ed’s kind has killed far more people than “Jaws” and its family in the United States.

That doesn’t diminish the horror that hits a person who survives a shark attack or has lost a family member to one but it shows even horses are actually more dangerous.

We shouldn’t fear either but show them respect and oh…please don’t try to ride a shark.

The Most Dangerous Thing In The Woods

One of the things that can keep you the most safe when in the woods is keeping an eye on foot traffic. Far more dangerous than sharks, horses or any animal is people.

In remote areas, finding an unusual amount of foot traffic is a real warning sign of finding illegal growers and meth operations. Believe me-It happened to me.

I give my safety tips and tell some crazy outdoors dangers stories including a guy who had an attack dog set loose on him when he came across a grow in Arkansas.

Listen to my latest episode of Dark Outdoors® the podcast that won “Best Podcast in 2025” by the Texas Outdoors Writer’s Association. Check out my safety tips and hear some wild but very true stories about people surviving encountering illegal grow and meth operations in the wild-including me! The story where an illegal grower sent an attack dog after a hiker in Arkansas freaked me out.

Oh and a few episodes back I did a program on the 1916 shark attacks that inspired “Jaws” and launched a defense of great whites in the river attacks in particular.

My father needs to hear this. I cannot place a toe in the Gulf without hearing his warnings of the dangers of animals biting and stinging.
