LAKE JACKSON, Texas—Sea Center Texas once again demonstrated why it is one of Texas’ premier marine education facilities during its annual Shark Celebration, transforming the hatchery into a place where science, conservation and family fun came together to celebrate one of the ocean’s most fascinating animals.
Centered around this year’s theme, “The Science of Shark Performance,” the event invited visitors to discover what makes sharks some of nature’s greatest athletes. Families competed in interactive challenges that compared their own abilities to those of sharks, including tests of speed, jumping ability, grip strength and bite force.
Throughout the facility, children and adults explored educational exhibits featuring real shark specimens, searched for shark teeth during fossil digs, identified their discoveries with experts, created shark-themed crafts, completed scavenger hunts for prizes, collected Shark Athlete Cards and met marine educators from across the region.
The result was an event that entertained while teaching visitors about shark biology, adaptations and the vital role sharks play in healthy marine ecosystems.
Sea Center Texas deserves tremendous credit not only for operating one of the state’s most important marine fish hatcheries, producing millions of fish that support Texas coastal fisheries, but also for using its facility as a platform to inspire conservation through education. Rather than focusing on fear, Shark Celebration highlights the remarkable biology of sharks and encourages visitors to appreciate these animals through science and firsthand learning experiences.
I was honored to present a seminar on the return of great white sharks to the Gulf, with a special emphasis on the growing body of evidence documenting these apex predators in Texas waters. A very engaged crowed gathered for the presentation, asking thoughtful questions about shark migration, satellite tracking, conservation and the expanding understanding of great whites in the western Gulf.
The Gulf Great White Shark Society was proud to participate in the event by operating an educational booth and distributing more than 400 shark conservation gifts to young visitors. Children received photographs of great white sharks and oceanic whitetip sharks along with shark conservn wristbands, providing a lasting reminder that these incredible predators are worth of our admiration.
One of the most encouraging aspects of the day was watching children eagerly engage with shark science. Instead of leaving with fear, they left with knowledge—and often a newfound fascination for sharks and the oceans they inhabit.
Events like Shark Celebration show that effective conservation begins long before anyone enters the water. It begins by giving families opportunities to learn, ask questions and discover the truth about wildlife through positive experiences.

We were grateful to be part of such a successful event and look forward to returning.
