Chester Moore, founder of Gulf Great White Sharks and longtime writer behind Higher Calling Wildlife, earned multiple honors at the recent Press Club of Southeast Texas “Excellence In Media Awards,” with a special spotlight on his growing body of work covering great white sharks in the Gulf of Mexico.
Among the awards, Moore’s interview with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy for his Moore Outdoors program took First Place: Best Talk Show, and his headline “Sadly, There Really Are Cocaine Sharks” for a blog post here earned Second Place: Headline Writing. In addition, an audio news piece covering the visit of a great white shark dubbed “LeeBeth” to South Padre Island won Third Place: Audio News Story.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by such a prestigious organization and to do so well in a field of so many great journalists. It’s humbling and also inspiring,” Moore said.
The recognition for his shark coverage comes during a breakout year for GulfGreatWhites.com, which earlier this spring was named Best Outdoor Website by the Texas Outdoor Writers Association at their annual conference in Rockport, TX.
“It’s very meaningful to be acknowledged for these great white shark stories. I was the little boy who dreamed of encountering these great creatures one day so to get to write about them and even receive honor is something I am grateful for,” Moore said.
“The growing presence of great whites in the Gulf is one of the most fascinating marine wildlife developments of our time. It’s a privilege to help bring attention to it and share these stories with the public.”
In addition to his shark reporting, Moore’s Higher Calling Wildlife blog won First Place: Top Blog for the fourth consecutive year, as well as multiple other honors across videos, environmental reporting and first place for podcast with Dark Outdoors®.
While Higher Calling Wildlife continues to cover a wide range of wildlife conservation issues, GulfGreatWhites.com has allowed Moore to dive deeper into his focused research and reporting on these apex predators returning to the Gulf.
“These awards encourage me to keep digging into these important stories and to continue exploring new developments in the Gulf’s marine ecosystem,” Moore said.
