Great White Sharks in the Gulf: New Sightings Added to Database

The Gulf continues to fascinate with recently gathered historical reports and new great white shark sightings that challenge outdated beliefs about these apex predators’ range. We’ve just updated our Gulf Great Whites Sightings Database with compelling new entries, spanning over 40 years of evidence that the great white shark is not a stranger to Gulf waters.

New Sightings Added:

1982 – A massive great white shark was seen at night under the lights of an oil rig in the Eugene Island Block off the coast of Louisiana.
April 2025 – A 17-foot great white was spotted by a charter fisherman off Siesta Key, Florida.
April 2025 – Another large great white was reported just off the coast of Anna Maria Island, Florida, by local fishermen.

These reports continue to support the reality of great white sharks in the Gulf not as rare visitors, but as a reemerging presence. And they show there have been reports that flew under the radar for years.
